Why Elective Subjects Are Important
A world-renowned and rewarded actor Hugh Jackman, whom a younger audience knows as a Wolverine in the X-Men franchise, studied journalism. He wanted to be a journalist. A few months before finalizing his studies, he realized he needed one elective subject to graduate. A colleague suggested that he takes the acting class because “it’s easy and doesn’t require an exam.” As it turned out, Jackman loved it so much that after graduating from journalism, he went on to study acting and become one of the world’s best actors.
Now you are probably wondering why we are talking about acting when you are interested in sports. This article is not going to be about performing, but about elective subjects. Although there is no doubt that Hugh Jackman is passionate about acting the same way you are about your sport.
Sport World School offers its student elective subjects. Aside from core courses, a student gets to choose two electives per grade. SWS has a list of more than 90 electives from which our students can choose. But what are electives, and why are they important?
Electives Help Student’s Discover Their Talents
While core subjects provide students with essential knowledge, electives help them develop personal interests and abilities. It’s hardly that an elective from high school will determine a student’s career like it was the case with Hugh Jackman in college. Yet high school electives are essential, and you shouldn’t dismiss them.
By following electives, a student develops some practical skills that will be useful through the rest of their lives. These subjects help them discover or figure out themselves, as well as the world around them. Additionally, they enrich the learning experience because students learn something they are interested in or passionate about.
SWS Elective Subjects
We understand that your entire focus is on your athletic career, and we support that entirely. But don’t forget that it is good to have other interests, too. If you are a SWS student, we can help you identify your interests, outside of the sport, through Career Exploration subjects in online middle school. So in online high school, you can explore and learn more about them. We already mentioned that we provide more than 90 subjects. They range from Architecture, Arts, Communication, Business Management, and Finance to IT, Health, Marketing, and STEM. There is a lot to choose from.
As a young athlete, you should also know that your efficiency and creativity in the sports field come from your knowledge, intelligence, and other non-athletic skills. That is another reason why education matters. Any of the electives mentioned above can indirectly help you achieve better results in sports, especially after your athletic career.
By choosing the perfect elective for yourself, you can ensure your path towards a college or a university. For example, if you are interested in Busines, at SWS high school you can get some basics. Therefore, once you proceed to Business studies at a college or a university, it will be easier for you to follow the curriculum.
Here is one more thing to keep in mind. A lot of colleges offer athletic scholarships that you can apply for. After finalizing SWS high school, you can directly apply to any of the colleges that are within the NCAA network in the USA, and put in a scholarship request. That allows you to study while still playing sport and working on your athletic career.
Even after you end your athletic career, you can continue to work in the field of sports in other positions. Any of the areas that are covered by electives can be that positions. For example, if you re interested in becoming a sports manager, then knowing about business management and finance can be of significant help. Maybe you are thinking about becoming a physiotherapist – in such a case, and you should opt for health-related electives. If a PR or journalist is lying deep down in you, electives regarding communication and marketing will be interesting.
